About the role:

The Accelerator Physics and Operations group is responsible for the operation, maintenance and development of the accelerator systems and performs research and development aimed at improving their reliability and performance.
The group is also responsible for the operation of the insertion device photon sources and works closely with the beamlines science teams to optimise the performance of the existing beamlines and expand their capabilities.
Your main responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
In this role, you will foster excellent engagement with other members of the Accelerator and Operations teams work closely with other ANSTO groups in delivering reliable and stable operations to support the Australian synchrotron’s operation and ANSTO’s research mission.  
 
  • Provide scientific and technical advice to the group leader and other staff on the operation of key accelerator systems
  • Making scientific and technical decisions to ensure allocated user beam time is delivered and maximising the use of allocated machine studies.
  • Develop knowledge of industry best practice and technology developments to contribute to the improvement of the accelerator and associated facilities.
  • Contribute to the maintenance and asset management plans of accelerators systems.
  • Apply expertise to accelerator development activities and projects across the facility to improve and extend capabilities for research, efficiency and operational reliability.
  • Promote and develop outreach activities within the accelerator group on behalf of the Australian Synchrotron and ANSTO.
  • Engage with Universities to attract students and supervise student projects in accelerator physics.

To be successful in this position you will have:
  • A PhD or equivalent experience in a relevant field (eg. Physics, Chemistry, Engineering).
  • Experience in relevant charged particle techniques, equipment and controls systems.
  • Knowledge in data processing and analysis software, such as 2D and 3D Electromagnetic simulators,  Matlab, lattice design software or particle tracking software would be highly regarded
  • Willingness to collaborate with other synchrotrons and keep up with the latest research in our fields of applications
  • Ability to work independently, manage time to meet objectives and troubleshoot problems on complex systems;
  • Good verbal and written communication skills;
