About the role:
We are currently seeking an ADS Beamline Scientist who displays initiative, drive, and passion for problem solving to join the team on a 6-month maternity leave contract. Reporting to the Beamline Group Manager, this role is an opportunity to work within the ADS beamline science, and broader project teams, to contribute to the design, build and commissioning of these new beamlines. Once the ADS beamlines are operational, the Beamline Science team will operate, maintain and develop the beamlines, supporting and growing an external user community from across Australia, NZ, Singapore and beyond. They will also undertake personal research, industry engagement and outreach activities aligned to the strategic goals of the organisation. 
 
Your main responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
  • Working within a dynamic team of experts and developing new research applications.
  • Providing scientific and technical support, advice, and training to national and international synchrotron beamline users.
  • Contribute expertise and knowledge to the development of plans and processes for the beamlines, and wider facility.
  • Engage with the Australian and international scientific community to develop a thriving synchrotron research user base.
  • Undertake a personal research program which increases your own capacity for beamline usage.
  • Promote and develop outreach activities within the ADS beamline team, and on behalf of the wider facility.

To be successful in this position you will have:
 
  • A PhD in physics, materials science, engineering, chemistry, geology or related fields with post-doctoral experience.
  • A good working knowledge of X-ray diffraction, data acquisition and analysis (e.g. Rietveld refinement), of data to produce impactful outcomes.
  • Ability to collaborate with the user community and keep up with the latest research in relevant fields.
  • Experience accessing large research facilities, including familiarity with risk assessment, experimental planning and/or sample environment development would be advantageous.
  • Ability to work independently, manage time to meet objectives and troubleshoot problems on complex systems.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
