About the Role: We are seeking a PO3 Marine Biologist join our State Government client based in Cairns on a temporary full time basis for up to 3 years. This role will support the development of sustainable fishing equipment through extensive field trials and quantitative data analysis.
Duties:
Liaise, network and collaborate with fisheries stakeholders throughout the state of Queensland.
Organise, prepare and participate in field work at short notice and for extended periods that may involve working in difficult conditions (e.g. remote areas, at sea, torrential rain).
Collect and effectively manage data in appropriate software following appropriate quality assurance processes.
Collate, manage and quantitatively analyse datasets.
Contribute to the interpretation of research results and their publication in scientific journals and reports, within identified timeframes.
Contribute to the timely publication of fisheries research, including science journal papers and reports.
Objectively analyse and solve problems and identify innovative new practices to improve operations.
Work effectively and collaboratively within a team of scientists and technical staff.
Develop and maintain effective relationships, networks and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders, including government, community and industry leaders, to support fisheries research.
Contribute to the development of extension activities and materials of research results to the Queensland fisheries industries through written reports and oral presentations.
Have a role in ensuring health and safety obligations for boat, field and laboratory work.
Essential requirements for this role:
A minimum of a Bachelor of Applied Science or Science in a field relevant to the position (e.g. fisheries, biology, ecology, environmental science) from a recognised tertiary institution or equivalent academic qualifications
Current C class driver’s licence
An in-depth understanding of the commercial fisheries and fishing gear performance
Knowledge and experience in the biology and ecology of target species of tropical fisheries and associated assessment methods
Highly Desirable to this role are:
Demonstrated knowledge and experience utilising technologies and strategies to optimise fishing gear efficiencies
Prior experience participating in extensive fieldwork in challenging conditions, especially at sea
Prior experience conducting quantitative data analysis, ideally using R
An understanding of how social, economic and ecological performance of a fishery is evaluated
Excellent communication skills, especially as relates building rapport and effective relationships with fisheries stakeholders and scientists
Project management experience and research project leadership
The ability to collaborate with fisheries stakeholders to undertake research
Research experience, including project design, data collection and analysis, related to fish and fisheries
A recreational boat driver’s licence
