About the role:

The Beamline Scientist — Powder Diffraction (PD) Beamlines is a 9 month maternity cover position. This role is an opportunity to work within the PD beamline and broader Synchrotron science teams to support the extensive Powder Diffraction user community. The Beamline Science team apply expertise to the operation, maintenance, and development of the beamlines, as well as undertake research, industry engagement and outreach activities. 
 
Your main responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
In this role, you will foster excellent engagement with other members of the Beamline, the Science Team, and other operational teams across the facility. You will be supported to develop knowledge of the capabilities, techniques and instrumentation to enable the best possible scientific outcomes.
 
  • Provide scientific and technical support, advice and training to beamline users.
  • Reduce and correct user data and provide advice or further data processing and interpretation.
  • Advise and collaborate on the operational, technical development and the maintenance of the beamline, endstation(s) and their affiliated workspaces.
  • Liaise with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Promotion and development of outreach activities within the Beamline Group.
  • Determine acquisitions and manage procurement of specialised equipment to maintain and increase new capabilities of the beamline.
  • Administer safe working practices and policies at the beamline and affiliated workspaces including the office, to ensure users and staff are working in a safe place.
  • Work collaboratively to share scientific expertise to contribute to the research culture within the company
  • Advise, assist, promote and execute beamline workshops to actively grow the community and increase beamline productivity.
  • Execute administrative tasks related to the beamline user program, operation and documentation, development and maintenance.
  • Undertake specific beamline responsibilities as assigned by the Beamline Group Manager

To be successful in this position you will have:
 
  • A PhD in physics, materials science, engineering, chemistry, or related fields with some post doctoral experience desirable
  • A good working knowledge of X-ray diffraction;
  • Excellent experimental and data analysis skills demonstrated by publications confirming your ability to conduct impactful research;
  • Willingness to collaborate with other synchrotrons and keep up with the latest research in our fields of applications
  • Ability to work independently, manage time to meet objectives and troubleshoot problems on complex systems;
  • Good verbal and written communication skills;
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work collaboratively and share knowledge with users and other stakeholders;
