This Global Pharmaceutical company located in the Inner suburbs of Melbourne are seeking an experienced Research Scientist to join their team. The projects this facility works on drive innovation to make a global difference in biomedical research and health outcomes. The role will be an initial 12-month contract and the facility is easily accessible by public transport.

About the role:
We are currently seeking an experienced Research Scientist to join the Cellular Biochemistry group which is responsible for establishing and conducting in vitro cell-based and biochemical assays to facilitate the screening and characterization of therapeutic candidates and to evaluate their mechanism of action.  

Duties will include but not limited to:
  • Design, develop and perform various in vitro cell-based and biochemical assays.
  • Investigate the mechanism of action of novel therapeutic molecules and their targets.
  • Use tools and knowledge in molecular biology and cell biology to identify key signalling pathways and gene expression responses for assay design.
  • Develop, validate, and standardise analytical methods.
  • Prepare experimental protocols, scientific reports and SOPs as required.
  • Present scientific data at departmental level, project team level meetings and externally at conferences and scientific workshops as required.
  • Work with other personnel in the laboratory to carry out experiments as required.
  • Perform data analysis using routine spreadsheet, graphing platforms, statistical software, and scientific software tools (e.g., GraphPad Prism, Excel, FlowJo, R, Snapgene).
  • Contribute to the organisation and maintenance of laboratory records.
  • The successful applicant will be required to complete training to meet HS&E requirements.  They will be expected to comply with regulations that ensure a safe workplace for themselves and others.
About you:
  • Applicants should have a PhD in cellular biochemistry, molecular biology and/or cell biology.
  • Maximum of 5 years’ research experience after PhD completion in relevant scientific discipline in industry or academia.
  • Experience in maintaining adherent and suspension cell cultures and aseptic technique (essential)
  • Experience in flow cytometry (essential)
  • Experience in light microscopy techniques (eg. confocal, live-cell, high-content imaging) (essential)
  • Experience in designing, conducting and analysing in vitro cell-based assays to assess ligand binding and cellular functions (eg. saturation binding, competition binding, chemotaxis and internalisation assays) (essential)
  • Experience in purification and/or assessment of function/activity of immune cell subsets from human blood (eg. mixed lymphocyte reactions) (preferred)
  • Experience in designing, conducting and analysing in vitro cell-based assays to assess ligand binding and cellular functions (eg. saturation binding, competition binding, chemotaxis and internalisation assays) (essential)
  • Experience in conducting high-throughput plate-based assays (preferred)
  • Experience in using robotic pipetting aids/equipment (preferred)
  • Excellent communication skills (listening, verbal, written)
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision as well as within a team environment
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis of data
  • Experience in writing scientific reports
  • Good computer skills in Macintosh or PC
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office programs (e.g., Excel, PowerPoint, Word), Flow Cytometry Analysis programs (e.g., FlowJo), molecular biology tools (e.g., DNAstar, Snapgene) and statistical programs (e.g., Prism or R)
