About the Company:
Our State Government client is seeking a Technical Officer to support the maintenance and curation of the Queensland Herbarium and Biodiversity Science collections on a casual fulltime basis (36.25 hours per week) until June 2025.

About the Role:
As a Technical Officer you will:
  • Maintain the Queensland Herbarium and Biodiversity Science collections, their associated data and documentation including, as required:
    • Digitisation of specimens at high resolution
    • Destructive sampling of specimens
    • Retrieval of specimens requested for loan
    • Providing technical support and assistance, as part of a team, in approved projects and initiatives associated with herbarium collections, specimen processing, data and information.
  • Support others to access material as required.
  • Perform data entry and utilise the herbarium collection databases to retrieve data for approved requests.
  • Curate assigned plant/fungal families to required herbarium standards.
  • Undertake Insect Pest Management tasks to help preserve the Queensland Herbarium specimen collection.
  • Foster a workplace culture that supports and promotes the interests of First Nations people and actively engage through our work to contribute to better outcomes for First Nations people.

Skills & Experience:
This position requires:
  • A relevant tertiary qualification in biological sciences or agreed equivalent qualification and/or experience.
  • Demonstrated botanical knowledge to understand and apply botanical names, accurate interpretation of scientific names and information.
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge of the methods, operation and trends relevant to contemporary Herbarium collection management, curation, collection maintenance, and data management, or a demonstrated ability to rapidly acquire these skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to use MS Office programs, including Outlook, Word and Excel. Experience in retrieval and entering of data in relational databases is desirable.
  • Support productive working relationships and operate as an effective team member taking personal responsibility for the completion of work, prioritise and complete tasks in an accurate and timely manner with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrated ability to respond flexibly to change and act proactively with a focus on performance, personal development and building positive working relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and utilise interpersonal and customer service skills.
